Style explores the best of Christchurch, giving readers the opportunity to develop and celebrate their individual style in life, home and fashion. A monthly publication, Style is presented on high-grade gloss stock with a hard cover. Delivered flow-wrapped to top real estate value homes around Christchurch, it targets readers with a high disposable income. This month I had the opportunity to speak with Jordan Luck, New Zealand rock legend and all around great guy. It’s always humbling when you speak with someone who has achieved the highest level in their chosen career, yet still remains down to earth and can appreciate the simple things in life, like a dry towel – his most valued possession. Speaking of simple and towels, in this issue we focus on bathrooms. The stunning feature on page 24 will help you achieve the right look – remember, less is more. Our house feature is a contemporary home in Edgeware through which we take a journey with the owners. From the devastation of the earthquake to the rebirth of their home, it’s a story that will resonate with many Christchurch homeowners. In our latest fashion editorial, we go backstage at the Isaac Theatre Royal for a Marilyn Monroe-inspired shoot. Leather, lingerie and fur combine to create this season’s opulent edit. Enjoy the latest Style, Victoria Tait EDITOR

DeaDly Ponies The first Deadly Ponies concept store is now on display at Ballantynes’ Contemporary Lounge. With a focus on quality workmanship, designer and founder Liam Bowden has carved himself a niche in the industry. Deadly Ponies products stand the test of time. As an added bonus, all their bags are designed, sewn and dispatched in New Zealand. We love their new Black Ocean range, especially Mr Leopard in wisteria.

Named after the three Bishop brothers (James, Robert and William) who originally transformed the area from a swamp to a fruitful orchard, the Bishop Brothers Public House offers fantastic food in a rustic, retro atmosphere.

O.G.B Bar and Café Set to open in the Old Government Building at 28-30 Cathedral Square this month, O.G.B Bar and Café is the vision of two local Cantabrians. Nick Inkster and William Lepoutre have taken it upon themselves to pour a bit of heritage back into Christchurch. “It has taken 14 months trying to cut the red tape! Good things take time and we wanted to get this right. We are here for a long time,” Nick says. “Every great city in the world has a memorable bar centred in the heart and this is what we are trying to achieve.” As well as live music most nights and a drinks menu boasting great beers, cocktails, whiskeys, liquor and fine New Zealand wines, there will also be take-away coffee available from the bar window, which will look over the courtyard situated directly behind the ruins of the ChristChurch Cathedral.

Wine Master

Bob Campbell is one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed wine experts, part of an elite group holding Master of Wine qualifications. There are only 343 Masters of Wine wordwide, and, on top of this, Bob is also an accomplished writer, public speaker, chartered accountant and founder of The Wine Gallery. With New Zealand on a wine buzz this month due to Winetopia, we took the chance to ask for some advice from the master. What is currently an on-trend or “socially acceptable” wine to be drinking? I tend to drink what I like rather than following any convention, but here are a few thoughts on upward trends. Chardonnay is strongly back in fashion after being elbowed aside by pinot gris a few years ago. That’s a trend I’m very pleased about. Sauvignon blanc continues its popularity, particularly in export markets where it leads by a huge margin from everything else. New varieties on the map include Albariño, which I believe has a strong future in this county. The sparkling Italian wine, prosecco, continues to enjoy growing popularity with look-a-likes emerging to cash in on the trend.

How important is the glass? Should we swap long-stemmed wine glasses for more contemporary tumblers? Glasses are very important. I estimate that the difference between drinking out of a good glass and a poor glass can contribute as much as 25% to the pleasure I get from drinking a glass of wine. I like to use largebowled glasses that are fine (and not chunky). I marginally prefer stemmed glasses, but regularly use stemless glasses, which can often be more practical (easier to stay in the dishwasher). Like wine, the choice of glasses is a personal thing. Choose a shape that pleases you. I don’t use separate glasses for red and white wine, preferring to put a little less wine in the glass when

I drink white rather than using a smaller glass. How does alcohol content affect the taste of wine? Is there a perfect percentage? As alcohol increases it tends to make wine become more full-bodied, very slightly sweeter and it can make the texture slightly softer. However, excess alcohol can leave a slight burning sensation on the throat and give the wine a thread of hardness. The perfect alcohol level varies from wine to wine. Alcohol must be “in balance” with the other components in the wine. What is your view on the New Zealand wine industry? The New Zealand wine industry is remarkably healthy when compared with wine industries

in many other countries. We are now the 13th largest wineproducing country in the world, having just overtaken Brazil and Greece. The prices we earn in most export markets are higher than just about every other country, which says a lot about the quality perception people have for our wine. We do “quality” (as opposed to “quantity”) very well. Our cool climate styles (fresh, bright, highenergy wines) are very much in vogue at the moment. I’d like to see New Zealand’s wine regions devote more attention to improving the wine tourism experience with more restaurants at cellar doors and more innovative ways of showcasing our winemaking and viticultural methods.

Mamma Mia Opening Night

The bright sunshine of the Greek Islands swept in to Christchurch briefly, on a magical whirlwind of song and dance. The Isaac Theatre Royal was alive with excitement as the music of ABBA pulsed out through the old-yet-new palace of entertainment. The story of a bride’s search for her father romped along on a madcap progress, as a trio of likely candidates turned up to confuse proceedings even more. Hit after well-loved hit from the Swedish superstars lifted the spirits and bore the audience aloft on the fantasy ride. To the composers, Bjorn and Benny we can say, “Thank you for the music,” as the '70s are set to live on down through the decades.

New ZealaNd Rock Royalty

– Jordan Luck

after 16 years, Jordan Luck has released a new album, Not Only… But Also, and is set to tour the country this month. He talks to Victoria Tait about the new album, his favourite music and his most important possession.

Jordan luck is one of New Zealand’s pop legends, famous for being the frontman and writer for the exponents. He has had a staggering 18 top 40 singles over the years, with Victoria – a personal favourite of mine – recently voted by the public as the eighth greatest New Zealand song of all time. His song Why Does Love Do This To Me? has become the ‘unofficial’ alternative to the New Zealand national anthem. Jordan has had the honour of being placed in the New Zealand Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame and, in 2012, was appointed a Member of the New Zealand order of Merit for services to music. a true legend in his own right he now fronts the Jordan luck Band. the members of this band were handpicked by Jordan, from a wish list he created.the new band comprises of Jordan luck on Vocals, Bryan Bell (ex-frontman of the dead Flowers) on Guitar, Beaver Pooley (formerly of d4) on drums, Rich Mixture (formerly of d4, dead Flowers and many more),

and Joe walsh (frontman of ekko Park). It has been a long wait, but after 16 years Jordan has just released a new album – Not Only… But Also. the album caused a bit of a media stir when the band announced they would get the New Zealand public to decide on its name. after much debating and the fact that every member of the band chose a different title, the name Not Only... But Also was finally decided upon by a secret vote. Jordan says he was drawn to the ambiguity of the title, “and dick Frizzell brought the album to life with his cover design.” Jordan tells Style the process he goes through when writing and finding lyrics for a song can be a mixture of personal experiences and stories that he might have heard. “one of the songs is based on story I heard about murder in lake tekapo, and another is a funny one about a guy in hospital,” Jordan says of the new album. the Jordan luck Band will be in christchurch at the carlton on May 23rd, to release their new album as part of New Zealand Music month.

The Man behind The Music

Who are some of your favourite composers, musicians and bands from the past and present? I have a very broad taste in music and really listen to everything, if I had to choose favourites – Graham Brazier and Shona laing. Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you? I constantly have songs that come into my head and stay around me for a few days, Splinter song Costafine Town came into my head this morning and Peter and The Wolf. How would you describe your perfect day? every day. What is the favourite song you have ever written? Finesse. It’s on the new album and is about selling paintings down in Southland. What is your most valued possession? a dry towel. Who would you be nervous to meet? an audience that I hadn’t rehearsed for. If you could blink your eyes and be in a favourite place right now, where would that place be? at the waterfall at te Moana Gorge, just out of Geraldine. Is there something you would like to do more of in the future? Ice-skating. And definitely more live touring. Where would you like to find yourself in 10 years? Having another interview with Style magazine.

Planning for business & life!

BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

Real estate has its own annual rhythm and it’s about this time of year I start reacquainting myself with some of its finer points. It’s the end of the financial year, the commencement of business planning and, for the brand I’m associated with, conference time. It’s surreal, stressful and strategic all at once, with the pressure really being applied to enter the new financial year refreshed and refocused. Which after a year of long hours and big results is not easy. Remaining relevant to your marketplace, engaged and committed takes planning and the kind of thought processes that keep you awake at night.

some good take-home points of value so it was best to be alert to them.

1. Any plan is better than no plan at all We all know the statistics that sit behind this statement and these can be readily accessed using Google. Basically they establish that there is a wide gulf between having a formal written plan and no plan at all. Completing a plan and following it positively correlated with business success and for many this flows on to personal success too.

3. We can all be open to being better Better people, realtors, partners, siblings, parents, etc. and putting time aside to determine how to do this makes us better human beings. So I always include this as one of my personal truths. 4. None of us has to be here Including me! So if we’re together, let’s bring our best selves.

2. I know one plan does not fit all

5. Our dreams fuel our outcomes

Plans can be long, short, elaborate or simple. Over the years I’ve had to do some plans that were so complex you needed a PhD to navigate them (hopeless). But the main aim for me as I dealt with my large group of attendees was providing a framework that got most, if not everyone thinking. Any trainer will tell you it’s almost impossible to engage everyone every time. So I go for as much participation as possible and I did remind them that there were

Having the right dreams, goals or purpose is like having rocket fuel in the tank. It’s just a matter of identifying them and for most people that’s one of the hardest things to do.

So there you are, that’s the framework. Now all I’m waiting for are the results! Enjoy this warm, lingering autumn as anyone who watches Game of Thrones will tell you – winter is coming.

Happily ever after Karen Pasco meets Ian, Aaron and Billie at their stunning home in Edgeware, which was destroyed by the earthquake and rebuilt with passion and style. pHotograpHy chArlIE jAckson a statue rests serenely in the garden of ian Martin and aaron orchard. the tranquil expression on its face is one saying “all is right with the world”. this artwork was wounded in february 2011, when the earthquake struck. the 1000kg monument thrown to the ground as liquefaction bubbled nearby. ian and aaron’s property, which they share with ruler-ofthe-roost Jack russell Billie, was, like many in town, deemed a rebuild – giving the couple the opportunity to rethink the property and its influence on how they lived their lives. to ensure they got this new environment essentially the best it could be, they enlisted the services of architectural designer tobin Smith from Colab architecture. originally the house footprint was 140sqm, but in order to accommodate a second bathroom and study they increased it to 165sqm to create a magnificent two-bedroom, twobathroom plus study home that is open, spacious, light, beautiful and interesting.

the interest comes in the distinctive aspects designed for them; the full-height window in the master bedroom that elongates the room and allows a sneak peek of the deck area, and the splashback window over the induction stove top that frames their statue perfectly from the inside, but also creates a quirky mid-height window outside. the study has recessed doors, which can be closed to create a third bedroom or private area when required, and the artwork – a combination of contemporary needlepoint, a grandfather clock, an original piece of slate from the roof of the ChristChurch Cathedral, African artifacts, pottery, glass and graffiti art by Guy Ellis – all combine to ensure this home is a place in which they love to live. throughout the home, ceilings have been raised to 2570mm to eliminate the oppressive feel of wide spaces with shortened height. two walls of bifolding doors in the open-plan dining area can be opened up to create a massive entertaining space and let the air flow through on a hot summer’s day.

The floor-to-ceiling white kitchen cabinetry combined with almost all internal walls painted in resene Double alabaster also creates a vastness of space, while the contrast of the deep resene fuscous grey in the study creates a spot in which you want to hunker down to read a book or listen to music. outside, the vertical cedar cladding has been enveloped in resene pitch Black stain, creating strength, while softness comes in the form of the beautiful plantings, including a magnolia tree – the only surviving plant from the earthquake. a soft moss riverbed will soon form to fill in the walkway from the master bedroom to the outside entertaining area. a large wooden deck wraps around the back and side of the house while, on the other side, the narrow raised vegetable beds are full of offerings for the table. Cleverly, the landscape design (completed by Ben McMaster) means, once the plants mature, this will become a place of tranquility right in town – private and peaceful. at times the build wasn’t always easy, but because their builder, Kade Wallis of Construkt, was also a great advocate of the plan, it meant they knew they would get the house of their dreams. and they have. overwhelmingly, the reverence of the graceful statue in the garden, which rests peacefully back where it belongs, is a true symbol of what has been and the future ahead. life for ian, aaron and Billie promises to be a lot better in their beautiful new home.

A bathroom does not have to be a dead end. It should be a space that you enjoy and one that enhances your home. There is the opportunity to create a more dramatic mood with bold materials like marble – think vanities, baths, and entire walls. If the budget does not allow for such luxuries, include accessories such as candlesticks and toothbrush holders to introduce that marble feel. The cold nature of bathrooms can be offset by the inclusion of accessories, or a flash of colour. People often underdress their bathrooms; try layering candles alongside a vase filled with fresh flowers, and anything from beauty brands who value design.

FaBrIC Love Interior designer Jessica Close provides advice on how to effectively design window furnishings.

I was taught very early on to start design with colour and curtains, and once you had that right everything else flows on from there. Curtains frame a room, and done correctly, are worth every penny. I am so over walking into homes with white walls and every shade of beige. or worse, white roller blinds. Window furnishings are an opportunity to develop a point of view, and a cohesive story. I love using pattern on pattern; the more layering you do the calmer a room becomes. With this in mind, I currently favour large prints and am unashamedly obsessed with Bennison Fabrics. The collection of prints and colours is extraordinary and feature heavily in one of my upcoming interior projects. I tend to pull entire schemes together by picking out tones and colours from the curtain fabric. If you aren’t quite ready to tackle pattern, plain linens, felts or wools can look incredibly smart unlined and with a trimming along the leading edge. There is nothing quite like

a trimming to finish a curtain, Claremont is the best. Its library of fringe, cord, pom-poms, braids and ropes is second to none. George Spencer Design also stocks heavenly options. For a more affordable alternative, see Zoffany. You can have almost as much fun selecting a heading as you do fabric. My default heading is a classic French pleat, probably because I habitually use curtain poles and rings and I think this looks best. If you can afford to spend the money, and your room can take it, a pelmet can look quite wonderful and adds so much to the complete look. each room in your home will demand curtain length consideration for various reasons. Unless you have a frightfully grand home I don’t let curtains pool, but rather break on the floor. A short curtain is very tricky to pull off, they mostly just look sad dangling in midair. once installed, resist the temptation to open up your curtains for a week or so, rather leave them wrapped so that the pleats keep as the fabric settles.

A p Bennison Fabrics, Crewelwork, 100% Linen, col. Original on Oyster. Made in England.

Peter Dunham Textiles, Samarkand, col. Blue/ Green on White. Made in USA. I adore Peter Dunham Textiles. His California cool prints are terribly good for interiors and exteriors and very in vogue (literally).

Lewis & Wood Fabrics, Adam’s Eden, col. Taupe, 100% Linen. Made in England. I like rooms to be charming and traditional but always with a sense of the unexpected. For established country homes I often look to Lewis & Wood or Colefax and Fowler for fabrics. Both fabric houses produce traditional classics as well as modern alternatives.

Founders John Kelly and Bob Morrison initially named the company ‘temperature Maintenance,’ however, as the company’s focus developed the name was changed to hpAC (heat pump Air Conditioning). From their inception, the family owned and operated company has sought to align themselves with the best in the business. that’s why daikin’s commitment to continual innovation and quality constituted a successful partnership between the companies. hpAC was a founding dealer of daikin in 1994, beginning the companies long standing association and establishing hpAC as a key player in the heating and ventilation market.

From single residential installations to extensive commercial design and build projects, hpAC provide a comprehensive service offering. All installation and technical staff attend annual training, and regular up-skilling programs ensure up to date information is always available. they are well supported by the outstanding capabilities of their products, in particular, daikin. daikin offer an extensive range of advanced high wall and floor consoles. their ability to heat efficiently in low temperatures has established them as a firm favourite amongst the inhabitants of our far-flung, perpetually cold, island nation. twenty-two years on, the relationship between hpAC and daikin continues to run hot, and certainly paves the way for continued success in the heating and ventilation industry.

Poker was the name of the game, and black and white the theme, as deep beneath the Christchurch Casino, Lady Luck was flirted with. The Mashina Lounge was the venue in which, drenched in mystery, hands were dealt and cards laid on the table. Many charities were to benefit from the shuffling and steely-eyed mindmessing when bets both careful and reckless were made, to win or lose on the whim of fortune. In the dark, sultry saloon, no matter which way the cards fell, all present were winners as the act of giving proved to be the greatest prize of all.

AuTuMn GArden MAInTenAnCe Landscape architect Craig Wilson shares his expertise on how to keep on top of your garden tasks. As the season moves into autumn our gardens take on a distinctive charm that reflects the cooling of the days and the gentle slide into winter. Yellow, orange and red hues from deciduous plants take centre stage and provide what can be the annual highlight in the garden. The resulting leaf drop can also be the start of a pre-winter tidy up with leaf piles to compost, pruning to be done and – if you’re really into gardening – the odd cutting to be taken. The layout of your landscape and the planting selection will determine the amount of work that’s required. Most people are looking these days to reduce their garden maintenance, and a couple of tips may help you do this if you’re looking to cut back on the workload. Firstly, reducing the area and depth of your garden beds and increasing your lawn area could be the right place to start. This may also increase the perceived size of your outdoor space as a bonus effect. Quite simply, the less area of garden you have the less time you’ll require to tend to it. If you don’t want to reduce area, try

the application of a quality mulch to your beds. A good layer – 75-100mm thick – of a composted mulch will supress weed growth, retain moisture and add organic content to your soil as it slowly breaks down. If you have deep borders, pea straw will do the same job more cost-effectively. One of the most effective tools used by garden designers to reduce maintenance is the well-selected evergreen hedge. Once established it will cover right down to the ground, and should only need two the three trims a year to maintain a well-defined form. Try buxus to hedge a deep garden border. It’s been done for centuries for good reason – the defined edge draws your eye away from the work required behind it. The key to hedge success is selection of the right hedging species. If you’re after low maintenance watch out for the trap of Teucrium and Lonicera. These are both vigorous growers that will establish quickly, but then need regular and numerous trimming throughout summer to keep a crisp look. Corokia and laurel may be better options with far less trimming required.

One of the most effective tools used by garden designers to reduce maintenance is the well-selected evergreen hedge. – Craig Wilson

enlighteneD lanDScaPeS the sun setting used to signal an end to an evening’s entertaining or its migration inside. as landscaping has evolved, so has the art of exterior lighting. there is now a huge selection of lighting options to ensure you can continue to enjoy your outdoor space beyond sunset. exterior lighting is both functional and creates ambience. Functionality Safety; Discreet lighting can guide guests to your home (lighting your street number or mail box), along pathways, and help to safely navigate tripping hazards such as stairs or edges. Security; Previously security lighting was limited to harsh sensor lights – which a fossicking hedgehog or passing car could trigger. Now security lighting tends to be much more subtle and considered- reassuringly illuminating your boundaries without the glaring ‘on/off’ full beam. Work spaces; Lighting can be creative to highlight certain parts of your outdoor space- in other areas it serves a more practical purpose. For example you will need enough light to safely see what you are doing when preparing food or operating a BBQ. Brightness is one consideration- but the direction of the light is also important- if the light shines directly in to your eyes over the BBQ it could easily become more hindrance than help. ambience Aesthetically, exterior lighting will enhance structures and plants. The night garden provides a completely different visual perspective to the day garden. Elements which may have been subtle during the day can become a feature. Sculpture or specimen plants or trees come in to greater focus when lit in the evening. The key is being selective and choosing the features of your night garden which you want illuminated rather than simply lighting the entire garden- as this will create a sensory overload. Outdoor lighting can also have an impact from your interior. Think of any windows as potential picture frames- rather than looking out to darkness, you have the opportunity to extend the garden viewing and use lighting to create an evening feature.

Direction The direction of lighting will provide vastly different effects. Front lighting tends to highlight the details but will flatten the object by eliminating shadows which show form. Backlighting will provide extreme contrast, bringing the shape of the object in to focus whilst minimising the detail. Casting light down upon plants will emulate how natural light strikes leaves, creating shadows on the underside. Up-lighting plants will subvert natural lighting and provide an entirely different visual effect in the evening. Lighting can be layered in both the foreground and background to create depth. colour Shades of lighting will have a huge variance. Cooler blue toned lighting creates a completely different effect from a warmer hue. Coloured lighting can be used for a more dramatic effect. lighting StyleS Solar lighting is popular and can dispense with the need for wiring in the far reaches of your garden. LED lighting is efficient and long lasting. Set timers will ensure your bulbs aren’t burning long after you are tucked up. If you want your lighting to remain discreet during the day, black lights and spike lights will achieve this by receding in to your garden. Lighting can be as much of a feature as that which it illuminates, with stunning lamp designs available from an array of materials such as copper or metal. Lighting is a finishing touch which can extend the enjoyment of your outdoor Lifespace and create a new dynamic night garden. A Landscape Architect can work with a Lighting Consultant to advise you on the best interplay between lighting and your ever evolving garden to ensure attention is drawn to the best parts of your garden throughout the seasons.

Frobisher Art Exhibition Opening

Keziah Oliver, Lucy van Deurson, Georgia Langridge, Jess Munro

Melissa Withers, Emma Stevenson

Cool shrubbery formed a serene veil of lushness within the depths of Frobisher and bade the visitor to tarry a while, as the evening of art unfurled. The creations imagined into reality by the three artists adorned the walls and floor, inviting those present to follow. Weaving around the furnishing displays, the walk of wonder cast a spell of enchantment, irresistible to the art hungry who, with senses now seduced by form, texture and colour, partook eagerly with eye and mind. The vision of excellence lingered as refreshed by the talent witnessed, guests made paths home in the night which was caressed by the gentle autumn drizzle.

Time To GeT ExcitEd

A major step forward for the city-centre rebuild has been taken with the award of the design and build tender for the Lichfield Street parking building. Construction of the car park is due to start in July with a consortium led by Clearwater Construction. The parking building will provide 804 parking spaces and 953sqm of retail space.

it really is time to get excited about Christchurch and step back to take a look at what is happening around our city. Yes, it is taking a long time, but as we all know, good things do take time. This month we take a look at some of the plans and progress of the central city, edgeware and Sumner. WORDS VICTORIA TAIT

edgewARe VIllAge As part of the Suburban Centres Programme, this master plan has involved local residents, business owners and property owners, along with government agencies, and interest groups. The good news is that funding has been secured for streetscape and improvements in the village and are planned to be implemented this year. The community requested the plan address; the disconnect between the different areas of shops, update buildings and a streetscape that are ‘tired’, traffic issues (safety for pedestrians and cycle parking), as well as landscaping and outdoor seating areas. The overall aim is to create a ‘walkable centre’ that locals can enjoy.

SumneR VIllAge Several projects in the Sumner Village Centre Master Plan have already been completed. One is the sculptural artwork on the Esplanade by Chris Reddington – a 14.5-metre-long sculpture bench made of polished concrete and colourful tiles. A contribution to the Sumner Container Art project has also been made. Now, a project team at CCC has been given the task of progressing the $1.5 million upgrade of Sumner’s main street. This project will entail further engagement with the community.

• What is your exterior style? What kind of homes do you like? Look around and take a mental note of what you are drawn to most. • What kind of exterior materials do you like? once you’ve worked out the look you like, research what materials are available and find out about their durability. • How will you use your house? it’s important to most people to have good indoor/outdoor flow and attractive, sheltered outdoor living. Imagine your home in various seasons. • Landscaping is important. Look around and consider what you like and don’t like. Are you a structured formal garden type or do you like a contemporary native style? • Sustainability and future-proofing aren’t just buzzwords anymore. It’s very important for your new home to be environmentally friendly. Research insulation requirements, solar hot water heating, ventilation options

and new technology to ensure your home will be affordable to run. Interior décor is really exciting. This is where show homes can really help you get to know current trends, colours, beautiful furnishings and furniture. Collect home magazines and figure out what you'd love to emulate. Also pause to give thought to architectural components inside. Do you like a raised ceiling? What kind of finishing do top homes use and which styles are you are drawn to? Heating is also a consideration. Have a look at what show homes are offering. Kitchens form the heart of the house. Show homes give you insight into the latest styles, materials and storage facilities available. Bathrooms are another big component. they need to be as luxurious as you can make them, so start dreaming...

Nature as Metaphor

Anne Hudson takes us on a journey through Jim Wheeler’s incredibly detailed bronze-casting sculpture, in which his technique and meticulous detail creates uncanny life-like objects. I like to think my preference in abstract art is where the artists freely express themselves. the mark or gesture is the result of some Zen-like moment of creativity. When looking at Jim Wheeler’s sculpture and its refined realism the same sense of wonderment is found, but there is no expressionist gesture here, but rather meticulous detail expressed with an exactitude that takes your breath away. the object is such an embodiment of the real object that one can only be amazed. his garden spade or fork if placed in a vegetable or flower plot could be mistaken for something left by the gardener. the bronze handle looks like an old oak handle, every grain showing the years of growth. the work is utterly convincing. Do not be mistaken into thinking this is mere copying of nature, here we have a true artist at work. Wheeler is originally from a small town in North Carolina and studied art and biology at university, focusing on how plant communities evolve, which informs his art practice today. Wheeler conceptualises the work through thinking and drawing then carefully executes the piece through the difficult

process of bronze casting. the central theme of Wheeler’s work is the contemplation of nature in its widest sense and how nature and humans are both participants of the natural world. these metaphors make us consider the complexity, beauty and balance of nature. he says that in essence his practice is a spiritual one in which he tries to demonstrate the interconnectedness of all living things and their interdependence within the environment. he views the natural world as a perfect system, one from which society and individuals can be inspired. Man can learn from nature and Wheeler’s work makes us aware and mindful of this connection. Narrative is not confined to text, despite that an artwork appears to be frozen in time. that garden spade and garden fork tell a story. From the handle, oak leaves grow entwining themselves around the piece. this is no modern implement sourced at the local hardware store but a carefully constructed copy of an english oak spade, which was brought to New Zealand by early British immigrants. used to dig the soil here, to help the family establish a home here, and then

Window tinting for heat, fade, glare and privacy control Windows with poor thermal performance mean heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. discarded for a more modern tool. Like the family, the life of the spade is not finished – the oak handle has taken root and grown foliage. It has been reborn in a new land – New Zealand – offering hope of a new future. this is a powerful metaphor of immigration and regeneration still relevant today. Wheeler is a well-respected sculptor who has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally. he works in a variety of scales, both large and small. his repertoire includes pieces such as tiny pohutukawa leaf, a medallion, or large works suitable for civic spaces and domestic gardens. Wheeler’s sculpture is thoughtful, beautiful and desirable. he is represented by artis Gallery and the Vivian in the auckland region and has exhibited locally at art in Garden. Wheeler lives in auckland with his wife and daughter.

Do not be mistaken into thinking this is mere copying of nature, here we have a true artist at work. – Anne Hudson

TRAnSiTioning Skincare through the SeaSonS Skincare expert and facialist Clemency Alice has a passion for beauty and organic skincare. Recently travelling to Paris and Australia to further her knowledge, she shares her secrets. the transition from summer to autumn can have a major impact on your skin’s overall condition and appearance. if the new season catches you unaware and unprepared, your skin can become very dry, extremely sensitive, lacklustre and more susceptible to breakouts. This is due to the change in oil flow – which was on an all-time high during summer – and the vitality of the ‘skin glow’ waning as cooler temperatures plummet, constricting blood vessels. here’s what you need to know to ensure your skin stays prepped and primped for the change of season. PReSeRve youR liPid bARRieR if you remove this protective skin barrier through more aggressive methods of over-cleansing and over-exfoliating, then the skin cells aren’t prepared and your skin becomes more vulnerable to the extreme temperatures and external elements of wind, sun and rain. a way to protect and maintain hydration in your skin is through spritzing your face after cleansing with a floral facial mist then locking the moisture in with your favourite facial oil or moisturiser.

How To KicK THe Sugar Habit Health and wellness coach Annabelle Matson looks in to the huge sugar problem facing today’s society and gives us some tools on how we can kick the habit. Overconsumption of refined and processed sugar has become a huge problem in Western society. An average Western diet contains around 40 teaspoons of sugar per day. The World Health Organisation recommends between 6-8 teaspoons. Studies show that the overconsumption of sugar contributes to many health concerns, such as tooth decay, diabetes, hypertension, depression, and obesity. If you are currently consuming a lot of processed and packaged foods, removing sugar from your diet can seem like a really big undertaking, but don’t be disheartened! Making the decision to kick the sugar habit is the first step to detoxing and living a healthier life. The improvements to your health and life will be incredible and across the board. Many people report that after removing sugar from their diet they experience weightloss, younger-looking skin, reduced feelings of anxiety and stress, endless energy, improvements to conditions such as autoimmune diseases and hormonal problems, increased focus, and much more.

6 Simple Steps To Becoming Sugar-Free: 1. EAt REAl Food Sugar is not only found in obvious places like fizzy drinks and lollies, but also a lot of foods that market themselves as being healthy or “natural”. The best way to reduce or eliminate sugar is to avoid processed and packaged foods. Just eat real, whole food in the least processed state as possible and use these ingredients as the basis for your meals and recipes.

You can still get a sweet taste using natural sweeteners in moderation, but just focus on going back to the basics of eating real, whole food. 2. Fight SugAR With FAt Fat is not your enemy! Good-quality fats make you feel full and reduce cravings for things like sugar and refined carbs. Along with protein, be sure to include good fats at every meal and snack. Some good options include nuts and seeds, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, and omega 3 fats from fish. 3. Fill up on pRotEinS Eat protein at every meal, especially breakfast. This is the key to balancing blood sugar levels, insulin and ridding yourself of cravings. Start the day with an omelette and veges, or a powerhouse breakfast bowl with soaked oats and mixed nuts and seeds. Good-quality protein sources include nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, chicken and red meat. 4. gEt Enough SlEEp Not getting enough sleep drives up sugar and carb cravings by affecting appetite hormones. It

57

makes sense, because you want more energy if you don’t sleep, so you are drawn to quickly absorbed sugars to provide this. Aim for seven to eight hours of sleep per night. 5. don’t dRink YouR SugAR Cut out sodas and fizzy drinks – this includes the “diet” variety, too, as they contain harmful artificial sweeteners. This alone would have a huge impact on your health. Choose healthy hydrating options instead. My recommendation is to pour yourself a glass of sparkling water and add a slice of lemon. You will still get the “fizz”, minus the sugar. Another option is to make your own vitamin-infused water using 500ml water, ½ cup of berries, a sliced lemon and mint leaves. Let it sit in your fridge for a few hours before drinking. 6. nouRiSh YouRSElF From the day we are born we associate sweetness with safety and comfort. Mother’s milk and formula are incredibly sweet, so it is natural we often resort to sweet food when we are feeling stressed or anxious. When you are craving sugar, think about how else you could nourish yourself – take a bath, prepare a nutritious meal, take a walk or get a massage.

Well-known for founding Burgers & Beers inc., his time as head chef at the george, and having opened new cocktail lounge Dragons Den, he has catered for new Zealand prime ministers, governor generals, Princess anne and the Prince of Wales. in this issue he shares with us his asian-fusion salmon bao and incredible hot sauce mayo.

Trevinos

RestauRant & BaR nestled in the heart of riccarton – a hub of social and dining establishments – the venerable Trevinos has been a mainstay since 2000. WoRds vanessa orTynsky PhotogRaPhy robyn Wilson trevinos is a local establishment that offers Cantabrians a quality – yet unpretentious – dining experience. the comfortable atmosphere, which we encounter on the night we visit, lends itself to catching up with family and friends over an impressive meal. suitable for both small and large groups, it’s an excellent venue for birthdays and special occasions, with conference space upstairs that can cater for up to 120 people in a cocktail environment. It’s a fun place to socialise, watch the rugby game or listen to live music. there’s even a spacious outdoor terrace that can be utilised year-round thanks to space heaters. With an extensive menu of crowd pleasers, trevinos caters to all appetites and palates. the all-day eatery serves brunch and $20 lunch from Monday to Friday. We peruse the dinner menu, which features several Kiwi classics, and everything from lighter fare and salads to pastas, pizzas and meat-centric mains. the comprehensive drinks list offers an array of wines, beers,

and cocktails, with sangria being an obvious winner. after being offered a selection of olives, we kicked off our meal with salt and pepper squid. Lightly battered and perfectly seasoned, the crispy texture made it easy to polish off the entire plate. For our mains, we indulged in two of the more hearty dishes: the cinnamon-spiced duck leg served on a bed of garlic mash, ratatouille of vegetables, dark cherry glaze; and the grilled lamb rump served with honey mustard and bacon potatoes with roast vegetables. on a cold night, these dishes were perfectly substantial, and neither of us could fathom the idea of dessert. With inventive updates on traditional dishes, trevinos takes comfort food to the next level. the enticing ingredients delight the senses and the generous portions ensure nobody leaves hungry. Whatever you’re craving, this neighbourhood institution won’t disappoint. We left with full tummies, grateful for the impeccable service, comfortable atmosphere and delicious food.

EMBERS

RESTAuRANT & BAR

Embers, the newest addition to the Papanui Club, is quickly becoming a dining destination. With Argentinian flair, this establishment is offering a unique experience. WORdS VanEssa Ortynsky PhOTOgRAPhy rObyn WilsOn

The two-storey Argentinian restaurant and bar is the perfect place to catch up with friends and family. The open concept kitchen adds to the excitement, offering a glimpse into the show behind-the-scenes. The glowing coals and firepit provide quite the backdrop. The atmosphere at Embers is as lively and inviting as its name. With high top tables for larger groups, smaller groups can choose to settle in and watch meals being prepared by the fire. Embers somehow manages to feel simultaneously intimate and sociable. With friends greeting each other from across the room, it’s easy to see why Embers is buzzing only four weeks after opening its doors.

While the menu features a few vegetarian dishes, meat takes centre stage at this Asado Argentinian barbecue. ‘Asado’ means cooking over wood fires, but also speaks to the social events associated with this style of cuisine. Meats here can be paired with a sauce and side of one’s choosing. Our Argentinian waitress recited the menu, eagerly answered all of our questions and offered excellent suggestions. The kitchen layout offers a glimpse into the intricate performance of meal preparation. My dining partner and I were mesmerised by the chefs manoeuvring past each other as they prepared entrées, mains

and desserts – all without missing a beat. As our plates emerged, we couldn’t help but marvel at their presentation. The Akaroa salmon I’d ordered was buttery and tender – melting in my mouth. Paired with a salad and salsa verde, it was satisfying without being heavy. I also sampled my companion’s barbecued lamb and roasted mushrooms, decraling both delicious. For the encore, we couldn't resist sharing the chocolate torte with caramel ice cream and brûléed pears. Not too sweet, we quickly devoured the entire plate. Setting a high standard for clubs around the country, Embers presents diners with yet another reason to visit the Papanui Club.

THE NEW MINI CLUBMAN.

Don’t expect much to ever change with Toyota’s big Land Cruiser 200. The reason being is that the platform on which it is based has already served the test of time in terms of how it has been engineered for purpose. It has also been constantly upgraded to earn the reputation as one of the industry’s best off-road drivelines. The ladder chassis, the four-wheel-drive mechanicals and the big engine all combine to provide a vehicle that is an offroad champion and a station wagon/sport utility vehicle with few competitors. The Land Cruiser 200 has just had another makeover, and I think that is all you can expect from Toyota and Land Cruiser at this stage. The changes Toyota has made to the Land Cruiser go a long way to keep the model fresh without compromising its ability. For 2016 the Land Cruiser gets new frontal treatment – bonnet, grill and bumper – while the inside gets some new kit including a rear entertainment system with two individual screens. The latter kept a nine-year-old entertained during the time I travelled a long highway route. Little has changed under the bonnet. Sitting there is a 4.5-litre, twin-turbocharged diesel engine. It is rated with mammoth power outputs of 200kW and 650Nm. Power is available all through the rev band; it is strong and energetic, taking into account that it does have to haul up to nearly three-tonne. The Cruiser in this form has a willingness beneath the throttle that is uncanny, and it does so with a characteristic V8 growl that is delightful to listen to. It also has reasonable fuel usage statistics. Toyota claims a combined cycle average of 9.5-litres per 100km (30mpg), which is not that far distant to my 11.1l/100km (25mpg) which incorporated a long highway drive, achieving an 8l/100km (35mpg) instantaneous figure at 100km/h, the

THe speCs PRice: Toyota Land Cruiser VX, $143,990. Dimensions: Length, 4990mm; width, 1980mm; height, 1945mm. configuRation: V8, four-wheel-drive, 4661cc, 200kW, 650Nm, six-speed automatic. PeRfoRmance: 0-100km/h, 9sec.

engine barely turning over at just 1800rpm. Drive is sent through a six-speed transmission and it is a beauty in terms of refinement and shift quality. How it harnesses that huge torque flow yet delivers with such sophistication amazes me. The Land Cruiser has ride quality to envy. It floats over bumps and ruts, yet has the rugged essentials so that off-road travel can be completed capably. and that is the secret of Land Cruiser, it is soft and sultry to drive in the everyday environment, yet it is technically superior when it comes to life off-the-beaten-track. I took the evaluation car on a riverbank route that follows the ashley river. It was perfect for the role with huge grip and drive programs that can be dialled in depending on the surface likely to be encountered. The two main dials are for low and high range, but there is also a crawl control mechanism and multi-terrain select, which regulates wheelspin depending on the type of ground encountered. The driver can dial up the appropriate setting within the choices.

The Land Cruiser is complex, there’s no denying that, but the result is extraordinary off-road prowess. It is so capable the driver can glean confidence from the vehicle, and yet at the same time each occupant is cocooned in a lap of luxury. The test car was the range-topping VX Limited model that sits at $143,500, there is a lower spec model at $121, 900; however, if you are serious about off-roading the Limited would be the best pick with its kinetic dynamic suspension system that improves ride quality and performance off-road. Not only has the Land Cruiser been given a makeover, it is still the quintessential family wagon with eight seats, perfect for the school run or whatever the constraints are during city driving. Interior space and associated comfort is vast, and it has a high level of safety for all occupants. Convenience features are too numerous to mention but there are the usual high profile items such as satellite navigation, electric driver’s seat, four-zone climate control, sophisticated audio and complex trip computer, the latter displayed through two digital dash panel readouts. At almost 5m the Land Cruiser makes no apologies for its size, but it has ability in a corner which adds to the feeling of control; it sits solidly on the road, while steerage is relatively precise through huge tyres (285/60 x 18in yokohama Geolander). The Land Cruiser is most certainly an off-road champion, yet it also serves in the everyday role. Thousands of buyers new and pre-owned from Japan will attest to that, there are many on our roads, and the facelift model builds heavily on that success.

Keeping Your SideLine StYLe Sportsmanship: fair play, respect for opponents, and polite behaviour by someone who is competing in a sport or other competition.

Sledging: the practice of making taunting or teasing remarks to an opposing player, especially in order to disturb their concentration.

In April I had the pleasure of attending my third Maadi Cup in the beautiful Mackenzie Country. The event brings secondary school rowers from all over New Zealand together for a week of competition at the highest level. The pride I felt as a mother was not only for my child, but for all children attending. The time, discipline and sheer determination that brought all the competitors to that week was inspiring. It’s often an emotionally charged journey – bringing great highs and lows that challenge both individuals and teams. Another round of seasonal sport is underway, in which we will be faced with varying scenarios of sportsmanship, good and bad. Dreams of sporting excellence can seduce some parents/caregivers and even coaches to completely

lose perspective of the really important things in their child’s life – ultimately, they are a child. The genuine will of parents for success for their children can unfortunately blur perspective of what is acceptable as fellow human beings. Sporting tactics are a genuine element of any discipline and great science and methodology provide tooling for further advantage and success. But what if sporting tactics then put an organisation or individual’s integrity into question? Whether we want to believe it or not, there is an undercurrent of intentional “sledging” or “banter” – whatever word you like to label it with – that is brewing within youth and, dare I say it, is being encouraged by some coaches and parents. Condoning these tactics fosters a belief that such

behaviour is not only acceptable, but admirable. Ultimately, what message is this sending to our children? Sport should be competitive and there definitely should be a winner and a loser, as that is a life lesson for all. Our children will be applying for jobs and positions that they may or may not be successful in. However, they need to learn how to be gracious in both victory and defeat. My May challenge: keep your sideline style. Put your autocorrect on, if you have a tenacity to speak before you think. Let’s go out to win – of course – but let’s win with style and grace!
